Homepage Ideas: Get Free

Homepage Ideas: Get Free

Similarly to the website for 'Waiting Game', I would want the artist to be instantly present visually whilst also exposing their music, the main difference, of course, is that this is a band rather than a singular artist. I think the placement of the photo and the music in the template below, is appropriate for an up and coming band, however, I would want it to correlate with the video more. I think that a photo of the band in a setting similar to the second element in my video idea with the light bulbs, however, all the band members will be in the frame together.

When it came to looking at ideas for the website for the artist of 'Black Magic' I looked onto Wix.com and various templates that would work with the band. I decided that the EPX template below would suit them well:

I wouldn't use photos in black and white because I envision the band to be more visually exciting with colour however, I like the idea of having a big photo to open the website with easy access to other tabs in the website making it easy to use as well as displaying their social media. As they scroll down there would be links to photo albums and video albums of photos from band shows, behind the scenes of their video shoots and snapshots from the videos and well as the videos themselves. I think then it's also important to have easy access to the band's music and tour dates. The main change I would make would be to have it far more colourful and have a picture based background rather than a solid colour to continually entice the audience.

An example of an already existing band website that I think would look good is The Night Cafe:

When it comes to the campaign of the 'Waiting Game', I would want the website to be fairly minimalistic like the elements in the video. Below  is the 'Soul' template on Wix that I think would work well:

The colours incorporated within the website would oppose the above because I would use mainly black and red, linking the website to the video however I like the overall set up with the artist in the centre of the frame and a brief description below which would help sell an up and coming artists 'star image'. Unlike other websites, I'd like her music to be one of the first things that you see when you scroll down because that allows the audience to have easy access to her music and makes the sight easy to use in general.

The band 'Wet' have a very interesting website in terms of the background that they use. I would really like to experiment with something because I think the fact that it's not a clear still image makes it visually exiting and the artist's audience would find it a compelling reason to stay on the site.

Below are examples of album covers that I believe apply to my artist:

In my video idea, there is a lot of isolation insinuated which does seem to oppose the general colourful nature of the covers above however, we're creating an entire campaign that will build star image and I don't believe that the rest of the album would be quite so isolating because after all we're trying to gain an audience. So, the album work would be a little bit more warm than maybe expected from the song and video itself. I really like the idea of having the artist seen on the cover but as a drawing or with a slightly busy, painted background because I think it sells both the artist and the music by making them neither present nor absent.

Digipack Ideas: Black Magic

Digipack Ideas: Black Magic

In order to come up with ideas for an album cover, I looked through various album covers from artists of all sorts of genres mainly because even if artists have different styles and create music from different genres, they can still appeal to similar target audiences, thus designing similar artwork to attract that audience. Below are some photos of album covers that I believe apply to my artist:

Similarly to when I came up with ideas for my digipack for 'Waiting Game', I looked through various existing album covers and artwork to come up with inspiration. Below are four album covers that I think show a variety of possibilities:
I'm not sure whether I would want the band to present on the cover or not. By having them there, it suggests that the band are selling themselves rather than the music but at the same time it would give a closer insight into the band for the audience. However, a quirky piece of artwork would demonstrate the genre and style of the music and the image of the band. In the top right corner, the band is present but the overall style is quite busy and eccentric colours which I think would create an interesting and unique vibe.

In my video idea, there is a lot of low key lighting used, hence why I think some of the above correspond with the visuals in the video. I also like the idea of the David Bowie cover because it was made from multiple clips which I think applied to my artists, suggests a sense of variety and uniqueness. The lowest photograph it of a few drawings that I compiled to create a full image. Although I would prefer there to be some darker tones incorporated and more of a red tint to give it a closer link to my video idea, I like the sense of mystery behind it and also by having a drawing rather than a photo itself detaches her from the marketing slightly and suggests that her career is more about selling her music rather than selling herself.

Music Video Idea 3: Get Free

Music Video Idea 3: Get Free

The song that I have created my music video idea around is Get Free by Newton Faulker.

For this song, the main idea revolves around the name of the song, 'Get Free'. The principal element will involve a very isolating room made of scrap wood or metal much like the photo below:

There would be some light which would come from small, high windows around the walls but the main lighting would come from in front in order to allow the audience to see the expression and struggle of the artist. Alongside this, there would be some red top lighting that would create an atmosphere to support the sense of imprisonment and lack of freedom within the lyrics. The use of the metal and/or wood would further this due to their drab colours.

The second element would involve the band which backs the main artist. There would be some spotlights on each musician but other than that the main source of light would come from lots of bulbs that dangle low by the artists. The lights will be programmed to turn on and off based on certain beats and highlights within the music itself assisting the energy and empowerment of the lyrics to increase as the song approaches the end.

There will be one final element involving dancers. The location will be industrial like a factory. There will be multiple dancers of whom there will be two defined sides, one trying to break free and one trying to conceal them. The dance with tell a story and will take the audience on a journey as they break free.

The artist that I'm creating, would be similar to artists such as Nizlopi and Paulo Nutini. The aggressive and yet enticing atmosphere created by the isolating location and the unrefined nature of the performances would fit with the song as the lyrics are about an escape from enclosing circumstances. The video fits with the star image of the artist as his main focus is his music and the message behind his words.

Music Video Idea 2: Black Magic

Music Video Idea 2: Black Magic

The song that I have created my music video idea around is Black Magic by The Amazons.

In my concept, the location would be quite simple with all the band playing their music so the singer, guitarist, bassist, and drummer would all be there with their instruments. The lighting would be pretty low with green and blue coming from either side. The singer would be wearing a black beanie, round sunglasses, a floral or patterned short-sleeved shirt and black trousers. The rest of the band would be wearing similar smart casual outfits. As the beat kicks in there would be some other strobe-like lighting. There would be a lot of close-ups on the musicians but predominantly on the lead singer corresponding Richard Dyer's theories that singers are always more in the limelight than the rest of the band. There would be various angles and dolly shots around the band especially towards the song as the song climaxes. The dark lighting appeals to the conventions of Rock as a genre so a target audience would find it appealing, the addition of strobe lights would entice the audience further as it would increase their excitement as the song comes to an end.

The second element would be quite complicated. There would be two bedrooms back to back with a wall dividing them. One would be more feminine and probably far more organised than the other featuring lighter, warm colours such as light blue, green, pink and yellow. Whereas the other would feature much darker colours. There would be two dancers, a male and a female who would dance in their rooms and would often have moments where they mirror each other and reach against the wall.

There would be multiple shots where the two are dancing together away from the set instead with backlighting which would have green and blue tints in order to fit smoothly to and from the band and dancers. The choreography would reflect the music. In the big moments, there would be a lift or a trick- something that would visually capture the audiences as the song goes on.

The band that I'm creating, would be similar to bands such as The Paris Youth Foundation and Clean Cut Kid. The energetic and fun atmosphere created by the presence of the band members themselves and seeing them dance and play their music together would fit with the song as the lyrics are about a fun yet sometimes tricky relationship. The video fits with the star image of the band because it allows the personalities of the band members to be presented letting the audience get to know them better and because the dancing is quite a typical convention of music videos future enticing the audience.

Music Video Idea 1: Waiting Game

Music Video Idea 1: Waiting Game

The song that I have structured my music video idea around is Waiting Game by Banks.

The main location would be a pretty simple apartment in which would be a desk, a
small table, some small lamps and a bed. The colour scheme would be rather neutral, staying with bland colours such as black, grey and brown. However, the walls would be a dark red connoting an atmosphere of power, passion, and danger. The artist would be wearing a black dress proposing a sense of elegance and mystery. Overall, this set would be fairly dreary, however, through the use of lighting, the intended atmosphere would be created. I want the frame to be flooded with the colours red and black, I would use red top lighting but leave the general light low to further create a dangerous yet enticing mood. I believe that this would help to draw the entirety of the audience's attention to the artist herself, which with this particular artist, her target audience would find appealing. One of Richard Dyer's paradoxes is that the star must be simultaneously present and absent for the consumer. With this contrast of light and dark, the artist would be able to seem rather distant and yet present concurrently. The video would begin with a single light on the artist against the red wall, her head would be lowered but as the camera gets closer and as the lyrics start, her head would rise. She would predominantly stare into the camera, creating a connection with the audience as well as looking aside from it. The camera work would begin mainly as close-ups and some extreme close-ups of her mouth as she recites the lyrics, she would do some movement such as running her hands through her hair but it would be fairly minimalistic, to begin with. However, when the beat kicks in, the lighting would increase making her more visible and the shots would widen allowing room for more movement. There would be moments where the artist wouldn't exactly be facing the camera but simply living in the set as it is an apartment. Towards the end of the video, the artist would be joined by a male character which we see shared a relationship with the artist.

There are two other elements that would involve dancers, the first to be introduced is an extremely minimalist construct. There would be no physical set, allowing the focus to be on the dancers and how we present them in certain light. I would want the lighting to be predominantly from behind the dancers, creating a slight silhouette effect. A lot of the dance would involve contact which would be exploited in close-ups to present as ora of struggle, escape, and longing. The room would also be filled either with haze or a powder like substance much like the pictures below:

The second element involving dancers would again be fairly minimalistic however it would be used more towards the end of the video as the song begins to climax.
There would be multiple lights behind the dancers that would again create silhouettes however they wouldn't all be shining at once, they would change simultaneously with the music highlighting some moments over others. There would be moments where the artist would also stand in front of these lights often accompanied by the male character but that wouldn't be until further into the video.

There is one final element involving this male character whom we would see dressed in a suit. Through the video, he will be seen a number of times in an office like setting often staring aside from the camera suggesting a sense of thoughtfulness which later we can read as lust as he enters the 'apartment' setting with the artist.

The artist that I'm creating, would be similar to artists such as FKA twigs and Wet. The lustrous and yet dangerous atmosphere created by the red lighting and the silhouettes would fit with the song as the lyrics are about a questionable yet passionate relationship. The video fits with the star image of the artist as she is the main focus the video, the footage will draw the audience's eyes to the artist making her seem more superior.
