Deciding Not To Use a Soundtrack
Today in our editing session we came to a conclusion on an issue that we were finding hard to resolve. Throughout the entire editing process, we've discussed our opinions on whether or not we should have a soundtrack and what that soundtrack would be. Today we came to the conclusion that we weren't going to use one. The main argument as to why we would incorporate a soundtrack is because its very common within thriller openings and it would help increase the tension of the piece with crescendos and diminuendos constantly manipulating the viewers emotions. However, because our opening is slightly more complicated than others due to the fact that we have 5 reveals whereas most thriller openings tend to only have one, having a soundtrack could dull out some of the reveals more than other distracting from the action.
Our dialogue is a key element in our thriller that will allow the audience to understand our narrative however, with a soundtrack over the top it could interrupt the importance of this element. Also, our use of ambient sound is very precise and by adding a soundtrack, it could either dull out the diegetic ambient sound or could over complicate the sound and make it all seem far busier than necessary.
I'm happy with the decision because I think it allows our thriller to be far clearer than it would otherwise be and I think that it conforms better with the style we've gone for. We subvert from a lot of stereotypes in our thriller as well as challenging many connotations. So, why not challenge one more?
